‘99.99 percent’ chance of Man City not winning treble again: Guardiola

Kriralok Desk:

Last season was like a fairy tale for Manchester City. They have made a history of winning the treble. However, Pep Guardiola does not see any chance of repeating that success this season. According to the Manchester City coach, winning the treble in back-to-back seasons is close to impossible. He would rather fight for the title as much as possible.

Manchester City won the dream treble by winning the English Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League last season. Among English clubs, only Manchester United had previously achieved this treble. That they did in the 1998-99 season under the coaching of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester City is still running strong this season. Like last season, despite a blip at the start, they have started to regain their edge in the later stages of the season. They have survived well in the Champions League and FA Cup. They are also in a strong position to retain the Premier League title. Defeat Everton in the Premier League on Saturday will at least temporarily lift them to the top. They are the only top 10 club in the points table to have played one less match so far. Guardiola’s team will remain at the top if they win their matches.

Their squad, as star-studded as they are, and the way Guardiola manages the team, has raised the possibility of them winning the treble again this season. But before the match against Everton, the City coach somehow dismissed that possibility.

“It will be like a fairy tale… or something bigger than that. Our current focus is to beat Everton and then see what lies ahead. There is a 99.99 percent chance that we won’t win the treble this time because no team has ever… until now… never, never… never done it.”

“If it was that easy, any other team… Manchester United at the time… could have done it. But the task is not easy. Everything is so difficult in this arena that what we have done in the past does not guarantee the future. Everything has to be repeated every three days until the end of the season.”

Guardiola wants to fight without looking at three titles for now. As the season progresses, he wants to see the fight hunger in the team unabated.

“Hopefully I can run with the same passion in March and April and be in contention for the title in May. That is our goal.”

Much to Guardiola’s relief, midfielder Kevin De Bruyne and main goal scorer Erling Holland are back on the pitch after a long injury layoff. The City coach once again highlighted how important they are for the team.

“When a 60-goal footballer returns to the team, it certainly helps the team to win. When a footballer who scores and assists a lot of goals is in the team, it wins the team. You don’t need to do research at Harvard or Yale to understand that.”
