Australia is the only World Cup team to get victory in two continents

Sarah Almas: Australia has a unique record among teams participating in World Cup football. They are the only football playing country in the world, who have a history of winning the highest competition of two continents. But despite that, Australia is a very average quality team in World Cup football. At least their gap with the best powers of the World Cup is more than two continents. Australia is going to the World Cup in Qatar with the aim of giving the best of their ability by accepting such reality.

Centenary Australian Football Team’s Outstanding Records:

The ‘centenary’ of Australia’s participation in international football has just been completed. On June 17, 1922, Australia and New Zealand met in a football match. It was the debut match in international football for both countries. However, Australia lost the match held in Dunedin, New Zealand by 1-3 goals. Bill Mander scored in the 44th minute of the match. He is Australia’s first international goalscorer.

Australia’s first international victory came against New Zealand in 1923. Australia won the match 2-1.

Australia’s first international victory against New Zealand in 1923. Australia 2-1 in that match.

Success in International Football:

From 1966 to 2006, the Australian football team belonged to the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC). During this period, Australia won the ‘OFC’ Nations Cup title four times. Two more times they lost in the finals.

Australia left Oceania in 2006 and joined the Asian Football Confederation. In 2015, they won the Asian Cup football title. They are the only country in the world to have won the highest title in two different continents. They lost to Japan in the final of the 2011 Asian Cup.

Australia played in the final of the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup. But the final was horrible for them. They lost 0-6 to Brazil led by Dunga and Romario and Ronaldo Nazarios.

In 2006 and 2015, Australia got the status of the best football team in Asia.

World Cup Football Record:

In 1974, Australia got the opportunity to play in the main stage of the World Cup for the first time. In the first match of the World Cup held in West Germany, Australia lost to East and West Germany. But in the third match they drew with Chile without a goal. Australia’s players, who left the group stage with one point from the first World Cup, could not score any goals.

After 1974, it took Australia 32 years to come to the stage of the second World Cup! Coincidentally, in 2006, they came to play their second World Cup in a unified Germany. And get their best success. In the first match of ‘F’ group, Australia beat Japan 3-1 to see their first win in World Cup history. Tim Cahill scored his World Cup debut in Australia’s jersey in the 84th minute. Although they lost to Brazil in the next match, they drew 2-2 against Croatia in the last group match. Goes up to the knock out phase. However, the Socceroos lost 0-1 to the champions of the season, Italy. But so far this is their best success in World Cup history.

Australia has never lost the status of playing on the main stage of the World Cup since 2006. However, Peru never made it past the group stage.
Australia has seen two victories in 16 matches so far in the World Cup. Four draws and ten defeats. Scored 13 goals and 31 goals.

Tim Cahill has the most five goals in the World Cup for Australia. Cahill has scored in both the matches that Australia has won in the World Cup. In which he scored a pair of goals against Japan in 2006. And a goal against Serbia in 2010. Cahill has played in four consecutive World Cups for the country since 2006. He has the joint record of playing the maximum 9 matches for the Socceroos in the World Cup. Where partner Mark Bresciano. He represented the country in three World Cups from 2006-14.

Memorable footballers in Australian history:

Several Australian footballers have gained worldwide recognition. One of whom is Tim Cahill. Cahill played eight consecutive seasons in the English Premier League for Everton from 2004-05. His number of goals in 278 matches of EPL is 68. The number of goals scored by four World Cup players in Australia’s jersey is 9. He is the only Australian player to win two ‘Man of the Match’ awards at the World Cup.

He spent 22 seasons of his club career in the English Premier League. He played for the fans in 2006 and 2010 World Cup.

Road to Qatar:

Australia had to overcome many hurdles to get tickets to Qatar. However, in the second round of direct play, the Socceroos have crossed the group barrier with aplomb. Australia, who won all eight matches, almost lost their way in the third round. They got the chance of play-offs by finishing third in the six-team ‘B’ group. Australia reached the playoffs with four wins and three draws and losses in 10 matches. Saudi Arabia and Japan have directly qualified for the World Cup from this group. As Australia (15) is only one point behind, Oman (14) is worried.

The top two teams of the two groups of the third round will play the continental play-offs against the United Arab Emirates and Australia. Australia won that match 2-1 in Al Rayyan, Qatar and secured a place in the intercontinental play-offs. Where their opponent was Peru in Latin America. Who were the favorites of the match. But despite fighting for 120 minutes, Peru could not score against Australia. On the other hand, the match at Al Rayyan was lost in a tiebreaker. And Australia, who bet at the last minute with a great victory, got the FIFA World Cup ticket for the fifth time in a row.

Andrew Redmayne became the hero in the last minute of the match when he stepped on the field and saved Peru’s Alex Valera’s tiebreaker shot. Before taking the opponent’s shot, his dancing by stretching his hands on both sides and bending his waist grabbed everyone’s attention. But he is the third goalkeeper of the team.

Jamie Maclaren scored the maximum seven goals for Australia in the qualifiers. And six Harry Shooters.

Australia’s current star:

Matthew Ryan has the most familiarity in the current squad of the Socceroos. He played in teams like Valencia, Brighton, Arsenal, Real Sociedad. Joined the Danish club Copenhagen FC this season. The country has played two World Cups and a total of 74 international matches. Received the ‘Golden Gloves’ of the best goalkeeper of the 20156 Asia Cup Football.

Coaches and Tactics:

He played 56 matches for the Australian national team from 1985-97. Has 19 international goals. That Graham Arnold has been working as Australia’s coach since the 2018 World Cup. The Socceroos have won 23 out of 33 matches under him. Four draws and six losses. Graham’s Australia made a great record in qualifying for the World Cup. Graham made headlines by bringing on third keeper Redmayne at the last minute against Peru. After taking a huge risk and succeeding, Graham said, “I wanted to shake Peru mentally. It was risky, but it worked.”
Graham’s Australia played 9 matches in 2022. Won six matches (including the tiebreaker against Peru). Two lost and one draw. Last September, Australia defeated their old rival New Zealand in two friendly matches.

Graham will basically play Australia in 4-1-2-1 or 4-3-3 formation in Qatar World Cup. Where his preferred XI will be-

Matt Ryan (Goalkeeper), Aziz Behich, Harry Suter, Kai Rawlins, Nathaniel Atkinson, Aaron Mooy, Jackson Irvine, Adin Rastich, Martin Boyle, Jason Cummings, Awer Mabil

Target for Qatar World Cup:

In Qatar World Cup, Australia’s opponents in ‘D’ group are France, Denmark and Tunisia. Australia is the weakest team in the group according to the FIFA ranking. The two-time world’s best ranking is 4 in France, 10 in Denmark, 30 in Tunisia and 38 in Australia. But on the stage of the World Cup, energized Australia will come down to cause at least one incident. And in that case their target can be the African country of Tunisia.

Australia’s first match against France on November 22. Surprisingly, the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup has a record of 1-2 goals against the French. And in the past five shows against La Blues, Australia has lost three, drawn one. In the group stage of the World Cup held in Russia in 2018, Australia lost 1-2 after fighting against France.

Australia is entering the field against Tunisia on November 26. In the past statistics of two times, the two teams have won one. Tunisia won the last Confederations Cup in 2005. Now Australia has the opportunity to take revenge for that loss.

Australia’s opponent is Denmark on November 30. Against whom the Socceroos have a record of one win, one draw and two losses in four matches. The two countries also met in the 2018 World Cup. That match ended 1-1. This time too, Australia will want to repeat that result, no doubt.

Australia’s World Cup Squad:

If there are no major changes, Australia’s 26-man World Cup squad will remain with-

Goalkeepers- Mat Ryan, Andrew Redmayne, Mitchell Langerak

Defence- Milos Degenek, Trent Sainsbury, Aziz Behich, Nathanial Atkinson, Joel King, Fran Karacic, Harry Shooter, Kai Rawels

Midfield – Aaron Mooy, Jackson Irvine, Ajdin Hrustic, Connor Metcalfe, Cameron Devlin, Riley McGree, Craig Goodwin

Forward- Awer Mabil, Mathew Leckie, Martin Boyle, Jamie Maclaren, Adam Taggart, Jason Cummings, Mitchell Duke, Garang Kuol

Conclusion:

Although the Australian team is from Asia, it is used to playing European style. At least that’s how it was seen in the past. Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka and Tim Cahill in particular had speed and rhythm in their play as they played in the European League for a long time. However, none of the current squad players are playing in Europe’s top five leagues. So there is no reason to get too excited about the starless team.
