Barcelona’s coaching search

kriralok desk:

Those in the offices at Barcelona have been working on overdrive for the past couple of days.

The Supercopa de Espana defeat to Atletico Madrid has prompted the club to look for an immediate replacement for Ernesto Valverde.

Despite their efforts, Barcelona have been rejected twice over the head coach’s job.

Firstly, Oscar Grau and Eric Abidal met with Xavi Hernandez in Doha on Friday and offered him the chance to take charge at the Camp Nou now.

The feeling is that Barcelona were planning to have Xavi take over at the end of the season, but the current situation surrounding Valverde pushed them to offer him the job now.

After Xavi had turned down the opportunity, it emerged that Ronald Koeman had also rejected an offer from Barcelona to replace Valverde now.The former Blaugrana defender is down to lead the Netherlands into Euro 2020 and didn’t want to pass up that opportunity to move to the Camp Nou.Another option for Barcelona is to promote Barcelona B boss Xavi Garcia Pimienta into the first team for the remainder of the season.Mauricio Pochettino is one other option, according to RAC1.

One of the main positives for him is his magnificent relationship with Ramon Planes, Barcelona’s technical secretary. In terms of other short-term candidates, Quique Setien seems the most accessible. The former Las Palmas and Real Betis coach has often been linked with Barcelona because of his expansive and possession-based style of play.Setien is currently out of a job after leaving Real Betis at the end of the 2018/19 season.Massimiliano Allegri is also available after leaving Juventus at the end of last season, but he’s unlikely to accept a short contract.

If Barcelona decide to pursue more of their former players, Estudiantes boss Gabi Milito and Montreal Impact coach Thierry Henry are also in the running.Ajax’s Erik ten Hag, River Plate’s Marcelo Gallardo and Belgium’s Roberto Martinez have all been linked with the job as well.

Whoever Barcelona go after, it’s clear that they’ve lost their confidence in Valverde and his days as head coach are numbered.
