While there are still plenty of months to go until the summer transfer window opens, Barcelona are already looking towards shaping their squad for next season.
Bolstering the defence is a priority, with the Catalan club almost certainly after a right-back to compete with Nelson Semedo and allow Sergi Roberto to move into midfield.
The Blaugrana are also in the market for a centre-back and the sporting department are already looking for options.
There are many reasons for wanting another centre-back and one of them is the physical state of Samuel Umtiti.
The Frenchman has spent the majority of this calendar year out with a knee injury and he’s played just twice since returning to fitness.
He wasn’t able to play in Barcelona‘s friendly with Cartagena on Wednesday night, suggesting that his knee hasn’t fully recovered yet.
Barcelona know how good Umtiti is when 100 percent fit, but, at the moment, he and Jean-Clair Todibo aren’t providing enough competition to Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet.
Youngsters Todibo and Ronald Araujo are highly thought of at the Camp Nou and their performances and growth could impact the club going into the transfer market.
Barcelona plan to keep Todibo in and around the first-team squad and give him minutes little and often throughout the campaign.
As for Araujo, he’s seen as a centre-back for the future and is expected to continue working with Barcelona B in the third tier of Spanish football.
