Sri Lanka eye new 40000 seater stadium in Homagama

kriralok desk:

The Sri Lankan government, in collaboration with Sri Lanka Cricket, is aiming to build a 40,000-capacity stadium in Homagama, it was announced on Sunday. This will be the largest cricket ground in Sri Lanka with stadiums in Galle, Dambulla, Colombo and Hambantota capable of hosting 35,000 spectators.

The 26 acre facility will be able to host day-night fixtures and will take three years to complete and will be the second cricket ground in the Colombo district with floodlight capabilities. The site on which the stadium will be constructed was visited by Silva and Minister Bandula Gunawardena

“We think this will cost us around USD 30 to 40 million,” Shammi Silva said.

Former Sri Lanka captain, Mahela Jayawardene, however, wasn’t too pleased with the announcement. “We don’t even play enough international cricket or domestic first-class cricket in the existing stadiums we have … Do we need another one?” he said in a tweet.

Sri Lanka has eight international cricket venues in Kandy, Colombo, Galle, Dambulla, Hambantota, Pallekele and Moratuwa.
